HPV

Human papillomavirus is the leading cause of cervical cancer, and is thankfully preventable.

A deeper dive

HPV is caused by the human papillomavirus, which means HPV is a viral infection and cannot be cured with antibiotics. HPV can be spread through skin to skin contact , however the most common form of transmission is through sexual contact. Additionally, HPV can be congenital, which means that syphilis can be passed from mother to fetus during pregnancy, which can lead to warts on infants.

HPV presents as warts, which are often times painless and unnoticeable. However if left untreated, HPV can develop into many types of cancer, such as cervical cancer, which is serious and life-threatening.

Although there is no cure for HPV, treatment is possible through medicine and ointment.
