A deeper dive
Syphilis is caused by the bacteria Treponema Pallidum, which means syphilis is a bacterial infection and can be treated with antibiotics. Syphilis can be spread through cuts and open wounds, however the most common form of transmission is through sexual contact. Additionally, syphilis can be congenital, which means that syphilis can be passed from mother to fetus during pregnancy.

There are 4 stages of syphilis. Primary syphilis, which can present as painless ulcers, is the first stage of syphilis. Secondary syphilis is a more progressed version, and can present as a rash. The third stage of syphilis is latent syphilis, and can be undetectable because this stage has no symptoms. The most advanced stage is tertiary syphilis, which can cause major damage to the brain, heart, eyes, and other organs.

Treatment for syphilis is a shot of penicillin, or an alternate antibiotic in the case of a penicillin allergy. Doxycycline is a preventative medication that can help lower the risk of infection.
